The 4th annual (OAG) Oxendale Auto Group Tennis Championships were held July 31-August 3rd at the Northern Arizona University indoor courts. A record 122 tennis players entered 26 events in men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles in both age division and NTRP (Nation Tennis Rating Program) categories which is a 58% increase from the 2024 event. The tournament is a USTA (United States Tennis Association) level 4 sanctioned tournament for adults, which is the highest level in the Southwest section offering the greatest number of ranking points for players. It is also part of the Southwest Section Grand Slam, which includes level 4 tournaments on hard, grass, clay and indoor surfaces.
The tournament drew players from 5 states (AZ, CO, TX, NM, MD) and had events for players ranging in age from 18 to 75. Some area players had some particularly solid results. Dana Jacko and Tracey Tibbs of Sedona won the women’s 3.5 doubles; Joanna Cook was the women’s 3.5 singles winner; Andy and AJ Mraz of Prescott won the men’s 4.0 doubles; Steven Riggs and Helen McCallum of Flagstaff won the mixed doubles 4.0 against finalists Andrea Meyer of Clarkdale and Mark Navarro of Sedona; Chris Howard of Prescott was singles finalist in Men’s 65 singles and won men’s 65 doubles with David Wilson of Phoenix; Jake Worseldine of Sedona was the men’s open singles finalist; Russ Blunk of Cottonwood was the men’s 3.0 singles finalist; Jeff Carelson of Clarkdale was the men’s 55 & over singles finalist; Gary Hattendorf was the men’s 55 & over doubles finalist with Chris Holeman of Phoenix andJennifer Recknor of Flagstaff was the women’s 3.0 singles finalist.
“This event was by far our most successful adult tournament in the past several years and I believe it will continue to grow based on how well it was conducted and feedback from the players” said tournament director, Sterling Fetty. All net tournament proceeds benefit growing tennis in northern Arizona.
