Tennis Tournament Raises Thousands for Junior Tennis in Northern Arizona

COTTONWOOD, AZ The Oxendale Auto Group (OAG) Tennis Championships presented by Northern Arizona Rehabilitation and Fitness was held at Mingus Union High School October 12 th and 13th and raised over $7,000 for junior tennis development in northern Arizona. All tournament proceeds will be utilized by the Northern Arizona Tennis Association as it supports ongoing junior and creates new tennis programs across its region.

The OAG Championships featured United States Tennis Association (USTA) sanctioned events in men’s, women’s and junior age categories in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Ninety eight (98) entrants from 6 states and as far away as Virginia and North Carolina competed in 13 events which included ages
ranging from 9 to 80.

We couldn’t be more pleased with the Tournament for its first year as the weather was ideal and the players enjoyed competing especially knowing all proceeds help junior tennis” said tournament director, Larry Lineberry. “Next year will be even bigger because the tournament was well run and that fact spreads fast in the tennis community”.

OAG Championships title sponsor and dealer principle of The Oxendale Auto Group, Matt Oxendale, said “We are delighted to support this tournament because proceeds help young people learn the very healthy sport of tennis and gives our youth the chance to learn an activity that can benefit them for a lifetime. The Championships also brings many people to the Verde Valley especially Cottonwood that would not come otherwise and now know of our beautiful town”.

Area Verde Valley players enjoyed some especially good results. 10 year old Julien Chavez of Cornville playing in his first tournament ever reach the finals of the co-ed 10 and under singles event. Sisters Aine and Danielle Khin of Clarkdale each won events in the girls 16 and under doubles for Danielle and 18 and under doubles for Aine. Mingus Union high school boys tennis team captain John Valentine shared the 18 and under mixed doubles title with Aine Khin. USPTA professionals Claudette LaLiberte of Sedona and Andrea Meyer of Clarkdale defeated Lynn Matthews and Stacy Moore both of Sedona 61;61 in the women’s 9.0 doubles event. Mark Navarro of Sedona defeated Shane Johnson of Surprise, AZ to win the men’s 4.0 singles title.
