Cinco de Mayo Invitational Recap

Northern Arizona USTA presented another unique tennis event for players May 4th and 5th at Mingus Union High School. The day started out at 9am on Saturday, with 3 USPTA certified pros offering a warm up clinic for all 18 registered players. These players were able to rotate court to court and hone in their skills before the kickoff of tournament play at 11am. Big shout out to Larry Lineberry, Andrea Meyer and Sterling Fetty for helping out all these players!

This Cinco De Mayo themed event was flighted by skill levels in both doubles and singles allowing for allowing for competition amongst similar abilities. Food was provided by Andrea Meyer and the Southwest Tennis Foundation, and all food was themed for the holiday!

Saturday went off without a hitch, which featured junior and adult players all competing throughout the day against each other. Sunday morning the day started out with the junior players taking turns batting a pinata, which didn’t take long for the teenagers to rip it open and grab the candy! Mother nature came in with a vengeance and brought high winds to the tournament. With all the finals still needing to be completed, this tested all players still competing. Congratulations to all our champions in their respective events, and thank you to all our sponsors for this along with our other upcoming events.

Griffin Hentz of Phoenix won the singles Blue division final over Gary Hattendorf 7-5, 6-2

Jayce Lawler of Cottonwood won the singles Red division over Adam Larson in epic fashion 7-6, 6-7, 10-6 in third set tiebreak.
